Driving Question How can I bring surfing to the kids in my community and offer support for a future of competing in the MIL?
A few challenges I had we getting publicity and then also trying to create a formal socialness with the parents and the kids at the same time. This is because I have never met these people before and not every trusted just anyone with their kids. The 21st-century skill that stands out is Civic literacy and engagement since I was becoming fully involved in the community and helping inspire and help others get access to a unique experience that changed my life. From this, I loved that I gained new connections and just embraced the community. Another 21st century skill I built on is Self-direction since, this project offered a lot of room for procrastinating and you had to make sure you don't waste time especially when you have to post a weekly agenda slide.
A few lessons I learned are …. Don't back out, if a part of your project is intimidating. Definitely don't procrastinate it. Ex. (Advertisement) And also try to aim more on certain exact plans instead of 50/50. Ex. ( Spots due to certain conditions) Always bet on the certain
I think this project well covered Civic Literacy and Engagement since I helped strangers/community members' kids learn to surf. In all, this project was successful in my terms and I’m proud of how it turned out and how the pieces were played out. A few surprises throughout this project are well everything was put into place and was executed. I was unsure about how much fun the kids would have since they were shy and honestly a little freaked out, but a bit into the lesson they were having tons of fun. I enjoyed looking back at the lesson and liking how everything worked out. Each kid I taught progressed throughout the lesson. I never really contributed anything to the community by planning an event, I normally went to events, so my 21st-century skill civic literacy, and engagement were heavily improved. Especially since it made me contribute socially and randomly.
I have had a few challenges that set me back. One challenge was bad conditions, as summer ended so did the swells. I planned to do a lesson at the cove with 2 girls and a boy, but it fell throughout and we had to reschedule because the ocean was flat. Another challenge was communicating., One of our parents couldn't speak good English and had trouble finding the surf spot called The Cove.
If I redid this project, I would have sent out the advertisements earlier and given myself more time to give lessons. I looked at this project as if the steps were a main part of the project, but the lessons were more time beneficial. Advice for juniors next year would be to find a project that you’ll have fun participating in. I would also recommend setting goals for each week that must be covered. Next year I want to make sure I give more time to the more important factors of my project.
In the past, I worked at Maui Wave Riders, a store for tourists learning to surf. This overall set me forth on this project since it gave me tons of experience working with beginners and how to teach and make sure everybody has fun. In the future, I will continue a senior project next year and I hope to do something like this, but hopefully more widespread. With the lessons and challenges of this project, I’ll be well-prepared for next year.
This above is my one pager, giving a time line of the project and my vision.
