What was most difficult about completing this task?
The most difficult part of this was staying focused on the worksheet as sharks swam over our heads. For me I couldn't take my eyes off all the cool species in the exhibits and I got very sidetracked. One family we had to locate was Labridae. We passed the exhibit and I didn't notice the species since I was too busy looking at sea horses, but luckily a friend has the kids of species in the labridae family. How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently? If we go on a visit again, I would have learned more about the history of these animals and aquatic centers. I wish I learned about how the centers keep a stable environment for the animals. For example, do they keep the same sharks or let them go? How does this relate to what you have learned in the past? In the past in marine science we learned about species and have done creature reports and learned about how coral is dying in the ocean. What everyone noticed was how the environment structure of coral thrived. All the creatures in the aquarium have been ones we researched. Future learning may include species and aquatic environments, I will have prior knowledge about that due to this project. |
In Mr. Adams, marine biology class this last quarter we took a trip to the aquarium. Prior to this trip we researched about echinoderm. Echinoderm in Greek means spinney skin.
In the first part of the trip, we watched a whale documentary in the 3d dome. Afterwards we split into 3 groups, with 6 people in each group. The assignment included 3 stations. The first station was called the shallow reef. The second was tide pools, the tide pools included starfishes and sea cucumbers. The third station was the open ocean, that included sharks, manta rays, and objects like submarines. In station 2 at the tide pools we had to inform visitors and species and how to handle organisms in the pool. Threw out all the stations, everyone had a worksheet to work on and a scavenger hunt. This worksheet included questions like abiotic factors and adaptation certain species provided and why they adapted like that. The main person I stayed and worked with is Ty Tualemoso. Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why? The 21st century skill this project addressed was Civic Literacy and Engagement. This skill is the understanding of and the ability to analyze and participate in the community. At station 2 we had to guide visitors as they came upon the tide pools. Our job was to respectively show them how to hold the organisms correctly. For example, the starfishes can not come out of the water so we taught them to gently hold them and set them down. We also provided information on the animals like explaining how starfish grow legs if they get eaten or lost in an attack. I improved my 21st century skill by learning a new job and actively being embraced into it and handling it. The 21st skill community engagement portion improved since visitors and the team thoughtfully communicated and respectively connected with aloha. What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why? In this assignment, I am most proud of how well the Maui Ocean Center provided us with a stable learning environment. I was proud of how interactive our groups were in teams and to visitors. |
