This project's objective was for us students to interact with each other through intellectual conversation. In the beginning of this project, everyone wrote two thesis statements, one on anything and the other on the Agricultural Revolution. With each thesis you had to have support and evidence to back your thesis, for this you researched or used provided sources to create a foundation for your thesis. After that you had to list a few developing questions, these were to keep the conversation interactive. If the discussion was dying then you might put forward a few questions to keep it burning. After everyone finished their thesis, reasoning, and questions, the next day only groups of 8 would be in the classroom, plus Ms. Terry. Everyone had only 8 minutes for each claim and people were graded on participation and working with the flow of the conversation. Students also must listen actively and give insight and detail into the conversation. With these discussions, usually only 1 or 2 claims might come up each 8 minutes since, if it fueled interactiveness, we would go with it. The second part of the grade included the preparation sheet with the thesis and evidence. At the end of the socratic seminar students would reflect on their experience on what they should’ve done and how they think they did.
For this assignment I think that the 21st century skill that's being used widely is the interpersonal skill. Interpersonal skill is how you interact and behave with others. This also means that you communicate well. This project portrayed this skill since it created an environment where you had to socialize, in a kind and thoughtful manner. For example, in the socratic seminar you had to listen and care about other people's thoughts and generously encourage them to talk through facial expressions and behaviors.
From this assignment I am most proud of my claims even though I did not share them, which means that my conversations had enough drive from other claims. One of my claims was that “If humans developed in the America’s, they would have started farming earlier on instead of foraging” Another side to this claim is that they would not have farmed animals. The most difficult part of this project for me was the socratic seminar. I did very well and really enjoyed making claims and reasoning, but I found it hard to stay active in the conversation. I think the main thing that created this was being slow to engagement. This means the conversation was somewhat rapid and made it hard for me to find my part.
We will most likely do this project again throughout the year and one of my goals I am setting for it is to try to keep the conversation flowing while engaging. I also want to make sure at least one of my claims is heard. Overall I enjoyed this project and I think it is very useful to develop important skills.
